The Ghosts of Wheaton: How the Red Grange Tigers Conquered Illinois High School Football

Oct. 11, 1991, was the last time Wheaton Central and Wheaton North would meet on the gridiron. The Tigers marked the occasion with a 21-7 victory. The following season, it would be up to the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers to fight the Wheaton North Falcons for city bragging rights in the Cross-Town Classic.

Fullback Phil Adler led the 1992 Tigers to the program’s first-ever state title as he ran for 186 yards on 24 carries (a 7.8-yard-per-carry average) and three touchdowns in the 40-34 double overtime victory over Joliet Catholic Academy. Adler rushed for 2,043 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns in the 1992 season and for 3,055 yards rushing and 40 touchdowns for his career. While Adler will never admit it, he has become the epitome of the Tiger football player.

Wheaton Warrenville South running back Bobby Nelson breaks away during the 42-0 victory over Glenbard East in 1992 that gave the Tigers their first-ever uncontested DuPage Valley Conference crown. Nelson would lead the team in rushing on the night with 139 yards and three touchdowns.

With his players surrounding him in the first practice in the summer of 1992, Tiger Coach John Thorne explained that they were no longer the Wheaton Central Tigers. He also understood that they might not be ready to call themselves the Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers. “So maybe instead this season, we can just be the Red Grange Tigers,” Thorne told them.
